Brent brings experience in design, development, and application of mainstream technologies, using visual communication to promote technology access and assist individuals of all abilities. He began his career as an audiophile studying electrical engineering as an undergraduate at MIT and working in the Music & Cognition group at MIT’s Media Lab. He developed interests in cognitive science and visual communication, and studied communication sciences and disorders as a graduate student at MGH, performing clinical R&D work at Tufts School of Medicine on visual communication technologies in speech-language pathology treatment. Brent joined a team from Boston Children’s Hospital to start Assistive Technology, Inc. in 1995 and served as vice president of engineering and product development, launching more than 10 tablet-based visual communication products in the educational, medical, and disability markets. He has supervised both undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and visual communication projects, has published papers, presentations, and patents on visual communication and human-computer interfaces, and is a member of the MIT and MGH Alumni organizations.
